The Virginia Beach Parks and Recreation Department is the steward of a diverse collection of natural and open space resources maintained and improved for shared public use. The new Administration Building presents a unique building configuration that reaches into the landscape, with light filled bays that provide views out into a lush plantscape beyond, enriching the workspace and public employees’ daily experience. The building and the site are seamless with the landscape design surrounding the new office building in a tapestry of native and adapted plants, visible from all work and common areas in the building. The design presents a bold departure from the city’s Neo-Georgian municipal development, where the distinctions between interior and exterior spaces, existing and designed landscapes are blurred as an expression of the departments goals that include a commitment to healthy lifestyles and environmental stewardship.
Accessibility and visibility of Virginia Beach Parks & Recreation to the public is maximized through increased quality of programs and services to citizens of all ages and abilities. Developed from start to finish with the environment and the ever-present connection with nature in mind brings their mission; “Exceed community expectations in an inclusive, innovative and sustainable manner”, to the forefront.
